Why would you choose anything else?

There is a lot of Hype about no-chemical cosmetics & organic skin care and natural personal care products. As consumers become aware of the huge amount of ingredients that are unassessed for safety in the many body products they use daily, manufacturers are going to great lengths to advertise and market their wares as 'natural' and even 'organic' to woo buyers.

A great number of these products do have valuable ingredients, but a closer look at the labels will reveal that they may also include contents in the formula that have not been tested for safety to the user, singularly, let alone in combination with other ingredients in the product.

Over the past few decades there have been a plethora of new chemicals introduced into the market and the safety research has had a difficult time keeping up with the testing. Much is made of not testing on animals, but the bunny logo recognised as the insignia of 'not tested on animals' is a little deceptive.

A manufacturer can make this claim if they or their agents have not undertaken animal testing for the past 5 years, outside that, all bets are off! You can be reasonably sure that chemicals used on humans have been tested on animals at some stage in their production or they would not be deemed safe enough to be included in products applied to the human body.

Natural, certified organic ingredients are extracted with little processing, no heat to destroy the beneficial and often healing properties and certainly would not use chemicals in the process.

The governing agencies, charged with the task of maintaining watch on ingredients used in cosmetics and skincare products appear to be overwhelmed. The ever-increasing number of products and wild claims of magical results are more often industry reviewed. A conflict of interest may well be suspected.

Consumers are having the wool pulled over their eyes by the major cosmetic brands who are jumping on the trend for organic personal care products. Rather than actually making their products organic, they adjust their marketing to describe their products as "natural" or "natural inspired". These types of "natural" products tend to have 1 or 2 natural ingredients (which can be sourced from non-organic or GM sources), with the rest of the product containing large amounts of synthetic chemicals.There is currently no legal definition of "organic" for personal care products, so companies can get away with a multitude of sins, including all sorts of chemicals in even "organic" labeled cosmetics. They can contain chemicals such as foaming agents (e.g. Sodium Laurel Sulphate) or humectants such as Propylene Glycol. Synthetic preservatives such as Parabens and Phenoxyethanol are also common in "organic" products.The only way to ensure that an organic skin care product is truly organic is to purchase products that bear the logo of a certification authority such as the USDA (USA) or Soil Association (UK). Products that are organically certified contain natural ingredients that have been grown and processed without the involvement of any types of pesticides, herbicides or insecticides.The UK's Soil Association has been certifying products for over 50 years. In addition to ensuring ingredients are sourced from organic sources, it stipulates stiff rules for the inclusion of synthetic chemicals in organically labeled personal care products.The Soil Association also prevents brands from mislabeling or hiding chemicals in their ingredient lists. Some "organic" brands may appear at first glance to have no synthetic chemicals in their ingredient lists.However, closer inspection shows some are hiding chemicals. As the number of people who are concerned about toxins in our environment grows, more and more skin care companies are jumping on the "Natural" and "Organic" anti-aging/skin care bandwagon.

But what does "natural" and "organic" mean when we see them on a mainstream manufacturers skin care product label?

How do we really know if the skin cream product is really natural?
How do we know if herbal skin care products are safe and non-toxic?
Is an "organic" product actually natural and made with organic ingredients?
What really are the best organic and natural alternatives to synthetic and mostly toxic chemicals?

Natural skin care - is it really any better for us?

Our skin is the largest eliminatory organ in the body. It is a two-way membrane. Toxins are eliminated through the skin via perspiration and absorbed through the skin into the body’s circulation system, through hair follicles and sebaceous glands, but not through the sweat glands.

One square inch of skin contains approximately 65 hairs, 100 sebaceous glands and 650 sweat glands. Every square inch of your skin is like a thousand open mouths, absorbing into the body most of what is put on it.

Can skin care products be truly natural and proactive?

Skin care manufacturers are not supposed to claim that their products penetrate the skin. If they did, the products would then be labelled as “drugs” and would be governed by much stricter regulations. However, it is now recognised that the skin does absorb many of the toxic ingredients in skin care preparations.

This is both good and bad. Good, because it means our skin can be nourished from the outside with some wonderful organic and truly natural ingredients. Bad, because some/many skin care manufacturers can use harmful chemical ingredients that would never be allowed to be taken orally, but are still absorbed into the blood stream through our skin.

SO - WHAT DOES “NATURAL” AND THE UBIQUITOUS “ORGANIC” MEAN ON SKIN CARE PRODUCT LABELS?

No where does the idea of “natural” or “organic” take a more gratuitous bruising than in the skin care industry.

If we first take the word "natural" and look it up in the Concise Oxford Dictionary we would find this description of natural thus; “existing in, or caused by nature; produced by nature; not artificial; true to nature; uncultivated.

It seems pretty clear what "natural" actually means to me! Does natural mean the same to you? However, when vested interests in the skin care industry get hold of the word natural - they put a whole new slant on it.

It may seem pretty clear to you and me exactly what we mean by natural but for the marketing men they obviously haven't read the dictionary and start bending the interpretation of natural to suit themselves when comes to their skin "care".

Many so-called natural skin "care" products have labels with long lists of chemical names, some followed by the phrase “derived from …” (some natural substance). This is grossly misleading for consumers who are looking for genuine safe skin care products.

Synthetic Chemicals are anything but natural!

When chemicals such as Cocamide DEA or Sodium Hydroxysultaine are followed by the words “derived from coconut oil” the consumer is led to believe that these synthetic chemicals must somehow be "natural".

While this may be true in some cases where a natural oil or extract is actually used, it is ultimately irrelevant because what you end up with after the chemical solvent extraction and processing is usually anything but natural, pure or organic. It is just another chemical concoction with some rather awful sounding long names to describe the process the original "natural" substance went through.by Narelle Chenery

Now what about "organic''?

Again if we look in the dictionary for the word organic it is pretty obvious to us what we expect to find as far as safe natural products in general are concerned. Would you say in the context you are expecting to use or find the term organic that this would be a fair description;

"produced and involving production without the use of pesticides, artificial fertilizers or synthetic chemicals."

To me it seems rather elementary that when describing a natural skin care product as organic that the above is exactly what the customer would expect. However, to the marketing men this is not what they mean by organic. Lets delve a little deeper into this play on words.

To create Cocamide DEA, a foaming agent found in some shampoos, requires the addition of a synthetic chemical and known carcinogen, Diethanolamine – DEA, to the coconut oil.

It's therefore no longer natural, or even what you could call safe! If we look at the term “organic” on a label, we usually think it means “grown and cultivated without the use of chemicals” as stated above. That's the conclusion most "natural" skin care companies would like us to come to when they use the rather loose term organic and natural.

Unscrupulous skin care companies are cynically using the chemistry definition of “organic” – which is also defined in the dictionary as "a compound that contains a carbon atom" to confuse consumers. This is known in the trade as confusion advertising so the real picture becomes blurred.

Carbon is found in everything that has ever lived. Vested interests - by using this definition of organic, they're saying that a toxic petrochemical preservative called Methyl Paraben is “organic” because it was formed from natural leaves that rotted over thousands of years to become crude oil, which was then used to make this toxic totally un-natural preservative they put in "organic" skin care.

How absurd is this when consumers are looking for natural skin care products?

The play on the word organic gets even worse. An increasing number of companies are now claiming to use “organic” herbs in their products. But, what about the rest of the ingredients? Are they safe? Are they "natural" or from an "organic" source? Surely there must be an authority that governs the use of the term “organic” on labels?

The simple answer is NO.

What natural skin care products are actually "natural skin care products"?

The term “Certified Organic” IS governed by a number of internationally recognised bodies. In Australia the Biological Farmers of Australia (BFA) is the largest. Searching for products with the logo of a certifying body on the label is the only way you can guarantee the organic authenticity and integrity of every ingredient in the product. This can then truly be called a natural skin care product.

Without the "Certified Organic" label, the organic claim means nothing, as it cannot be verified and most likely it is a complete hoax perpetrated by the marketing men and their hype

Toxic Chemicals in toothpaste, chemicals in shampoo and foaming agents have been identified as chemicals causing cancer, skin conditions, and influencing our welbeing.Statistics at the turn of the century showed a 1 in 80 chance of getting cancer. Now 100 years later there is a risk of 1 in 3.

Today there seems to be so many diseases, disorders and syndromes that we never heard of years ago.I personally believe that the chemicals we are exposed to today play a large part in our ill health.

When you think about it, our food, our water and the air we breathe have been poisoned. The personal care products that we put on our bodies which contain harmful ingredients are helping to poison us as well.

I would like you to take a look at your personal care products and check for the harmful chemicals that I am going to talk about. The first one is Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) this is one of the most commonly used foaming agents. Click on the link below for further information: Sodium Lauryl Sulfate Sodium Lauryl Sulfate is a chemical in shampoo, toothpaste and many other products. It is systemic and passes through the skin and can lodge in the organs of the body.

Propylene Glycol is found in most cosmetics and personal care products. It is also used in brake and hydraulic fluid. It is used in your pet food! The reason that propylene glycol is used is that it is a humectant, i.e. it keeps things moist!Some argue that propylene glycol is not harmful or that we would not get enough through cosmetics etc., to harm us.Some other ingredients to keep a look out for are:

Alcohol it is found in mouthwashes. A survey in 1991 showed people with mouth, tongue or throat cancers had used more than 25% of mouthwash.

Fluoride found in toothpaste is poisonous if used over long periods. It has the capacity to accumulate in body tissue. Talc should never be used because of its carcinogenicity, i.e. cancer causing effect, and acute respiratory distress caused from inhalation. Implicated in vaginal cancers.

Formaldehyde is a preservative used in cosmetics. It can cause eye, nose and throat irritation, coughing, asthma attacks, nausea, vomiting, skin rashes, nose bleeds, headaches and dizziness.

Diethanolamine DEA: Triethanolamine TEA: Monoethanolamine MEA: are all absorbed through the skin and accumulate in organs. They are skin and eye irritants. When they are found in products containing nitrates they can chemically convert to form nitrosamines, which are potentially carcinogenic.

Toluene a solvent found in nail polish, hair spray, hair gel can cause asthma attacks. It is also a neurotoxin and can affect the nervous system. It can also cause liver damage.

PEG: Laureth (ethoxylated) may contain dioxane, which is potentially a cancer causing, oestrogen mimic and endocrine disrupter.

You can do your own research on these toxic chemicals and make your own decisions. It is up to you to keep yourself and your family safe.

Regular Toothpaste Contains Toxins

Oral care is the cause of many diseases and illnesses, as poor oral care gives viruses direct access to the body. Proper oral hygiene is not only important for one's appearance, but also for ones physical health. Simply brushing ones teeth with regular toothpaste twice a day will not suffice.Commercial toothpastes and shopping store name brands may actually do more harm than good. While these toothpastes may appear to clean teeth and improve bad breath, most toothpastes and oral care products are filled with harmful chemicals and substances that are known to cause cancer and can be potentially toxic.The most common chemical ingredient among grocery store brand toothpastes is fluoride. Every scientist agrees that fluoride is toxic when consumed in large quantities and can cause brittle bones and teeth over time. Most consumers are unaware of the long term affects of their commercial toothpaste, but do not know where else to obtain good quality oral health products.In addition to forming brittle bones and teeth, fluoride is actually considered a toxic substance. Warning signs must now be placed on all toothpaste containers which contain fluoride, as mandated by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA).Fluoride is toxic for adults when the amount is over 1000 ppm or 500 ppm for children. A shocking fact is that most grocery store toothpaste brands have a formula which contains 0.15% w/v fluoride ion. Most oral care companies are not concerned with their consumer's health, as these same brands have a warning label cautioning them to "keep out of reach of children." Despite this mandated warning label, they actually target small children by using cartoon characters on their products!Every mouth has bacteria living in it and it is not possible to rid oneself completely of these micro-organisms. Each of these bacteria produces a sticky substance which allows them to attach to the surface of the teeth, and once they have attached they multiply. Until they are brushed away, the bacteria forms microscopic colonies and continues to grow and lay down what is called a biofilm. Biofilm is also known as plaque and if it is never removed it can absorb the minerals in saliva and will calcify into a hard substance called tartar.It is important to remove these bacteria before they have a chance to form microscopic colonies, however most consumers choose grocery store brand toothpastes containing fluoride which also weakens the teeth.A healthy, reputable alternative to traditional oral care brands is a company called Trivani International. Trivani offers an oral care product called Trivanis Cleansing Toothgel which contains no harmful ingredients, and does not contain fluoride. Xylitol is a key ingredient in Trivani's Toothgel product, as it is a natural ingredient typically derived from corn.It helps to remove plaque and prevent plaque build-up. Zinc citrate is another naturally occurring mineral and important ingredient which intentionally interferes with the calcification of plaque into tartar. These two key ingredients replace fluoride and are a healthy alternative and create a more efficient product.
